Busy Moms Need Quiet: The Small Leaks We Miss

The Small Leak

A few weeks ago, our church hosted a 24-hour prayer vigil. Everyone signed up for one hour to pray for the church.

Normally, my house is rarely quiet. When the kids are home, it’s noisy for obvious reasons. But even when they aren’t, there’s almost always something playing. Music. A podcast. An audiobook.

If it’s not noise, it’s motion. Cleaning. Laundry. Designing new shirts. Answering messages. My hands are busy, and even if the room is technically quiet, my mind isn’t.

The only time my house feels truly still is around 4:30 in the morning. Those early hours feel different.

But my prayer hour for the vigil was scheduled for early afternoon — a time of day that is never quiet.

That day, I intentionally made the house still.

No background noise.
No multitasking.
No distractions.

Just quiet.

Near the end of that hour, I heard the faintest tapping sound. So faint I almost ignored it.

I got up to investigate and traced it to my bathroom window. In the very top corner, ice had melted, frozen, and melted again. Just enough to create a small leak.

It wasn’t visible. It was hidden behind the blinds. Water was dripping down the sill into a plant below.

If I hadn’t been sitting in complete quiet, I never would have heard it.

And if I hadn’t noticed it then, it would have eventually become a much bigger problem.

That moment stayed with me.

Too Much Noise

We live with so much noise.

Sometimes it’s literal noise.
Sometimes it’s busyness.
Sometimes it’s just mental clutter.

And when everything is loud, we miss the quiet warning signs.

The small leaks.

  • A child who needs more attention than we realize.
  • A marriage conversation we keep postponing.
  • A habit slowly pulling us off course.
  • A quiet time with God that keeps getting pushed to “tomorrow.”

Scripture warns us about this kind of gradual drift.

“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,
and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”
— Proverbs 6:10–11

It’s rarely one dramatic decision that causes damage.

It’s the small things. The unnoticed things. The things we ignore because we are distracted.

Peter gives a similar warning:

“Be clearheaded. Keep alert. Your accuser, the devil, is on the prowl like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
— 1 Peter 5:8

We can’t stay alert if our lives are constantly loud.

Why Christian Moms Especially Need Quiet

As a Christian mom, quiet can feel almost impossible.

There are meals to plan.
Laundry to fold.
Appointments to remember.
Children who need you — physically, emotionally, spiritually.

Silence can feel unproductive.

But quiet has a purpose.

Quiet helps us notice what needs attention before it becomes a crisis.

It gives God room to gently nudge our hearts.

It helps us recognize when we are drifting instead of walking closely with Him.

The small problems in our homes and hearts don’t usually shout.

They tap softly.

And if we never pause long enough to listen, we miss them.

Practical Application

You don’t need to eliminate all noise.

You don’t need a perfectly structured morning routine.

But you might need a few small pockets of quiet.

Here are a few simple ways to begin:

  • Turn off background music while you cook dinner once this week.
  • Sit in your car for two extra minutes before going inside.
  • Fold one load of laundry without a podcast playing.
  • Take five quiet minutes before bed instead of scrolling.

Not to perform.
Not to check a spiritual box.

Just to listen.

Ask gently:

“Lord, is there anything small I’ve been missing?”

You may not hear anything dramatic.

But over time, you’ll become more aware. More attentive. More steady.

Tools To Help

If having something tangible helps you focus, a simple Scripture journal or printed verse cards can create intentional quiet without feeling overwhelming. Even writing one verse and reflecting on it for five minutes can slow your heart enough to listen.

I've created two printable devotionals.  The first is a guided reflection on the Bible verses mentioned in this post.  The second is a guided meditation that can be done in 5 minutes. You can download them both for free below.
